Among the experiences to be had in Abruzzo, you certainly should not miss the experience with good taste, food and wine.
The cuisine of Abruzzo is in fact full of imagination and surprises. It comes from a land with ancient farming and seafaring traditions.
We have listed some of the delicacies you will find in our region, but be assured: there are many more, all worth a taste!
One of the best local delicacies you should try is maccheroni alla chitarra, an egg pasta prepared alla chitarra that brings out the flavour of the sauce even more.
A unique seafood speciality is brodetto di mare, a tasty soup prepared with different varieties of fish combined with tomatoes and served in earthenware bowls. The fish was generally considered 'poor' but has since been adapted to create this dish, now a true pillar of Abruzzo cuisine.
The lumachine di mare are also a tasty fish dish worth trying. They are sautéed with oil and rosemary and cooked together with tomatoes.
Among the 'land' delicacies worth mentioning is the Frentano sausage, produced on the slopes of the Majella. This is a pork sausage, cured for up to two months or sometimes preserved in lard or oil. Arrosticini, on the other hand, need no introduction. The famous skewers made from sheep or mutton have now conquered the whole of Italy with their strong and delicious taste.
As far as wines are concerned, we cannot fail to mention the famous Montepulciano d'Abruzzo, with its strong colour and aromas. The grapes are grown in four provinces of the region, Chieti, L'Aquila, Pescara and Teramo. This wine goes very well with red meats and pecorino cheeses.
Another wine worth mentioning is Trebbiano d'Abruzzo. This is an autochthonous white grape variety, which is cultivated in hilly areas no higher than 500 m above sea level.
This fruity wine is perfect with seafood hors d'oeuvres, white risotto or semi-mature cheeses.
